Photographing International Smoke – Modern Interiors, Amazing People, Flavorful Food!

By March 29, 2019 architectural photographer

I had the pleasure of working with both Chef Michael Mina and Ayesha Curry just prior to their Grand Opening of their restaurant International Smoke, Aventura, FL. Initially, I was contacted by the public relations manager from the Mina Group who requested interior architectural photography and a few portraits of Ayesha and Michael. We scouted the restaurant the night before the shoot during their soft-opening event and it was absolutely “smoking” with hundreds and hundreds of invited guests, media, and several NBA players, including Ayesha’s husband, Steph Curry. We were treated to amazing food, drink, atmosphere and a great time. That definitely set the stage for our shoot the next day.
I was dealt the challenge of having to shoot all the interior photographs within only a few hours of the official opening, and with only two hours total to shoot 5-6 images plus the portraits of Chef Michael and Ayesha. Of course, we would have loved to shoot during an evening, or late-night, but that wasn’t possible due to the schedule of the restaurant. Working through the chaos was nothing new to me, and I relied upon many years of experience to work with efficiency and decisiveness. In terms of my camera, I utilized the Phase One IQ3 100 Trichromatic digital back and I used my Cambo technical camera system to capture the interiors. I switched over to the Phase One XF medium format camera for the portraiture. Lighting was provided by Profoto and my units of choice were my B1’s with white umbrella modifiers. Both Ayesha and Michael were extremely gracious and this shoot was one of the highlights of our year thus far!
